Library Assistant/Children’s Programmer
21 hours a week plus on-call shifts
$22.51 to $27.67 per hour

 

Located less than 30 minutes from Ottawa, Mississippi Mills is a growing, vibrant,
cultural community. The Mississippi Mills Public Library serves over 13,000 residents
through two branches in Almonte and Pakenham.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plans, promotes and run children’s programming at both branches
  • Provides cataloguing assistance (inputting bibliographical information into library
    system)
  • Processes internal and external requests for Interlibrary Loan material
  • Assumes primary and back-up responsibility for circulation desk activities
  • Provides reference and reader’s advisory services to patrons
  • Writes content and updates the Mississippi Mills Public Library webpage,
    newsletter and other marketing material
  • Assists with providing orientation, guidance and supervision to student
    assistants, new adult staff and volunteers
  • Participates in the selection of new library collections
  • Compiles monthly and yearly statistical reports on programming activities
  • When working alone, contacts CEO/Chief Librarian, in case of emergency
  • Other duties as assigned

SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Effective written and oral communication skills, in English and French considered
    an asset
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Working knowledge of cataloguing resources, ILS systems and Microsoft Office
    suite software
  • Experience in a public service setting, preferably in a public library environment
  • Experience working with children
  • Strong planning and organizational skills with the ability to multi-task on a daily
    basis
  • Strong customer service and public relations skills
  • Knowledge of event planning

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (grade 12)
  • A post-secondary diploma of two years or equivalent in Library and Information
    Technician or education would be an asset
  • 1-2 years’ experience in a library setting
  • Experience in an office environment
  • Computer experience and knowledge of basic computer software such as
    Microsoft Office, social media tools, internet
  • Excellent communication and public relations skills, tact, resourcefulness, ability
    to multitask, flexibility and the ability to perform under stress
  • Valid Driver’s Licence (class G)
